Who is the Church of Christ?

    Who is the Church of Christ?

        There are many churches which call themselves the Church of Christ. No one body has an exclusive legal claim to the name. Some of these churches are denominations, some are cults, and there is a large number (perhaps an infinite number) of different types of churches which call themselves the Church of Christ which differ from other "Churches of Christ" in one or more of the following ways:

    • Worship;
    • Organization, hierarchy, and form and qualification for leadership positions within the church;
    • Whether instrumental music is played in worship;
    • Whether discipline is enforced within the church;
    • Whether women can participate in leading a portion of the worship service (e.g., preach, lead prayers, direct the singing, or serve as an elder or deacon);
    • Salvation (e.g., whether baptism is necessary for salvation or if salvation can be obtained by faith alone, whether once saved a Christian is always saved);
    • The frequency and manner in which the Lord's Supper is taken, and by whom;
    • Doctrinal matters (e.g., marriage, divorce, remarriage, drinking, homosexuality, adultery, fornication); and
    • Whether a church may spend its money for such things as a preacher's salary, orphanages, schools, missionaries, social programs, and recreational facilities.
